Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Kotabaru district in collaboration with the mining and steel industries PT Sebuku Iron Lateritic Ores (SILO), revitalize 9,000 hectares of ponds, for the cultivation of shrimp and fish.


Head of the Jepara Center for Development of Brackish Water Aquaculture (BBPBAP) I Made Suitha in Kotabaru on Sunday said, from 9,000 hectares of ponds, approximately 5400-6000 hectares have gained recommendation from Kotabaru Fisheries and Marine Agency.

"While the rest, approximately 3,000 hectares of ponds are located in a mangrove forest or nature reserve," said Made at the stocking of shrimp in aquaculture areas dissemination in Sigam Village, Kotabaru. This is a series of commemoration of the 14th Archipelago Day in Kotabaru.

Through this program, Made said, the Jepara Balai Besar will provide guidance to the fishermen who are members of the Kelompok Usaha Bersama for one year to cultivate shrimp and fish.

"So there will be a transfer of shrimp farming technology and brackish water and sea water fish farming," he explained.

Made added, the current market price of shrimp good enough, so that the joint venture group members can earn huge profits through shrimp aquaculture.

Indonesia ranks fifth in the world as the country's largest manufacturer of shrimp producing. And Indonesia's shrimp production is still dominated by natural or catch shrimp.

Unlike Thailand, about 70 percent of shrimp production that is sold is the result of cultivation.

According to Made, Indonesian fishermen work ethic needs to be improved, in order to master the shrimp business, which is now the market is improving.

Minister of Marine and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti adding, Indonesia needs to be self-sufficient in feed for shrimp and fish farming. "We should be able to utilize the natural resources we have in a sustainable manner," she said.
