The South Kalimantan Environment Agency is trying to save the riverfront area of Anjir Muara, Barito Kuala District, by planting rambai (Baccaurea racemosar) and mangrove.
Head of the agency Hanifah Dwi Nirwana here on Tuesday said that his office is trying to save the flora and fauna, those are the mascot of South Kalimantan, from extinction.
The planting action, part of it was carried out in the Anjir Muara, about 19 kilometers from Banjarmasin, by involving Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia (SBI) and environment-care fishermen.
"The planting we are doing now is at the Mangrove Rambai Center (an area to protect proboscis monkeys) at the riverside in Anjir Muara, Barito Kuala," he said.
The planting, which also to commemorate the National Nature Conservation Day (HKAN), was also as an effort to protect natural habitat, with a target of planting 10 thousand mangroves by 2020, and 50 percent has been realized.
"This is as a clear proof that the government is preserving the environment. We can see how mangrove has many benefits, both ecologically and economically," he pointed out.
Currently in South Kalimantan there are 13 conservation areas. While there are also a number of conservation areas are built independently by communities and companies.
Most of these conservation areas have various problems, including change of land use and land and forest fire which caused the damage of plants and many animals were displaced.
Chairwoman of Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia Amelia Rezeki said, SBI continues to strive to build public awareness to care about environment conservation.
"There are many threats of land conversion as well as forest and land fires," she said.
