The Banjarmasin Environment Agency will examine the water of the Martapura River which experiences high turbidity, with a yellowish color.
Head Supervision of the agency Wahyu Hardy Cahyono here on Monday (March 30, 2020) confirmed the water in the river to its tributaries was murky and yellowish.
"This morning as I cross the Merdeka Bridge I see the river water rather turbid and yellowish. I thought, there may be a high rainfall in the upstream, then bringing sediment and mud from the agriculture activities, or it might be from mining or plantation," he said.
According to him, this condition is not yet certain whether it is dangerous or not, as there is no laboratory result yet.
"The agency's laboratory is taking samples, we will see the results later," Wahyu said.
Meanwhile, the government-owned water company, PDAM Bandarmasih, whose raw water treatment depends on Martapura River, assured thre is no much problem with the current river water condition, production runs as usual.
"It doesn't matter (Martapura River water is murky), it is still safe, as long as it is not salty," said Head PR of the company Abdul Wahid.
According to him, such a condition frequently occurs, and the water can still be processed into clean water. Except if seawater intrusion rises to the high level it cannot be treated.
"Turbid water can be mixed with water taken from irrigation. However to make it clear we need high chemical, but it still meets health," he said.
