The Regent of Central Hulu Sungai (HST) HA Chairansyah together with residents have the first harvest of cultivated pepuyu fish in the Walatung Village, Pandawan Sub-district.

"The cultivation of pepuyu, snakehead fish (locally known as haruan), and giant snakehead fish (locally known as tauman) still faces many obstacles either in technical, growth, or reproduction aspects," he remarked, Friday.

Pepuyu (Banjar language) is the name of a type of freshwater fish that tends to live wild. Other regions know it as bethok or bethik (Java.) And puyu (Malaya). In English it is known as climbing gouramy or climbing perch, referring to its ability to climb on land. Its scientific name is Anabas testudineus

To increase the production, the local government is currently collaborating with the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) through studies and mapping the local potentials, one of which is to establish a village of local fish.

He expected the HST Food and Fisheries Security Agency to keep making synergy and always coordinating with fish farmers groups in an effort to boost growth in fishery sector.

On the occasion, a fish feed making machine was handed over as assistance by the ULM.

Meanwhile, Head of the Food and Fisheries Security Agency Hj Sunar Wiwarni in her report said, the activity which was followed by a field meeting of the Waringin Baru fish farmers was to find out the extent of development, success, problems, and obstacles in managing fisheries.

It was also to know the development of aquaculture business after the govenment assistance, to evaluate and increase productivity through synergy program, to improve management, distribution, and market mechanism.

"We hope this activity to be used a forum to discuss and convey views and problems in the field, especially technical obstacles in fishery cultivation, so we can get a solution," she pointed out.
