To mark the arrival of the fruit season, residents on Sebatik Island, Nunukan District, North Kalimantan Province, bordering Malaysia held a durian festival in Maspul Village, Sebatik Tengah District.
The festival was held on Wednesday, July 24 by residents as a way to promote the durian fruit as a superior commodity on Sebatik Island, the Head of Nunukan District Public Relations and Protocol, Hasan Basri in Nunukan, explained Tuesday.
The durian fruit of various sizes and qualities were displayed in front of local residents' houses for five kilometers, he added.
"This durian fruit festival is a form of promotion by way of every resident in Maspul Village displaying his durian fruit in front of a five-kilometer-long house," he said.
Durian fruit is a superior product grown on the island directly adjacent to Malaysia. In the past week it has entered the harvest season, he said.
During entering the harvest season, residents in the area, including guests from outside Nunukan District, hunt for this aromatic fruit to have a taste of it.
This festival was the first to be held and led by a combination of local farmer groups, Hasan Basri said.
