Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) hopes that print, online, and television mass media will be more child-friendly in reporting by avoiding vulgar narrative of children's abuse.
This was conveyed by the Inter-Institutional Relations Expert Staff of the Minister of PPPA Rini Handayani on the socialization of child-friendly reporting guidelines with the theme "Improving the Quality of Child Friendly Media News" in Banjarmasin on Thursday.
In the ministry campaign in cooperation with the Press Council and all the media in South Kalimantan, Rini said the role of the media was very important in supporting districts and provinces to become child-friendly areas.
The media, she added, is an important partner in fulfilling the rights and protection of children, so the media must be more empathetic towards the reporting of children, both children as victims and suspects.
Rini hopes that the media can strengthen empathy in reporting on children's cases by avoiding exposure to child cases with vulgar narratives, brutal vocabulary, and maintaining the confidentiality of children for their dignity.
The media can also multiply news about children who have achievements, embrace happiness, and build dreams to do good for the universe.
"If the public's empathy for children is applied consistently, the media will be able to lead the public's carefulness of the preventive aspects of violations of children's rights," she said.
Head of the Press Council's Education, Training and Professional Development Commission, Jamalul Insan, said until now there were still journalists who were not right to report on child abuse, such as writing down complete identities, showing faces and others.
"The error is still common, even though it is not allowed and journalists or the media, they could be prosecuted legally," he said.
Based on the review of the Press Council, IJTI, AJI and others, he added, many media found ethically violated, both in print, television and online.
