Banjarmasin, (Antaranews, South Kalimantan) - Illegal gold mining activity around the reservoir Riam Right, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan is still threatening, because of the waste generated from mining can accelerate the process of sedimentation.

One of  hydropower staff, Johan, in Banjarmasin, Sunday, said illegal gold mining activities is feared adverse impact on the condition of the dam. "There is a risk of water mixed with the content of mercury and mercury used for mining into the reservoir," he said.

In fact, he added, the function of the reservoir not only for hydropower, but also as a water intake for drinking water and for fish farm with cages system.

According to Johan, based on research, the malicious content is not polluting the reservoir, but when the activity is allowed to proceed did not rule could damage the reservoir.

Public Relations Manager of PT PLN South and Central Kalimantan Bambang Sutanto and Hydropower Manager Riyadi said they often conduct raids, including with the police, but until now these efforts have not the maximum impact yet.

"Often when we raid we found no mining activity, after we left mine back in operation," he said.

PR Manager Bambang Sutanto said, gold mining has devastated the forests around the reservoir, due to mining activity is also coupled with deforestation.
