The Kotabaru Legislative Council (DPRD) together with the local government proposed the establishment of a Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in Jakarta.

Deputy Speaker of the Kotabaru DPRD Muhammad Arif said, elements of the DPRD leadership with the regional government, represented by the Deputy Regent H Burhanudin, had submitted the proposal for the establishment of the polytechnic to the ministry.

"We have submitted the proposal and received it by the Director General of HR Development and R & D of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries," Arif said.

The district now waits for formal answers to the proposal from the ministry, which will then be followed up with technical preparations in the area.

The existence of Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic for Kotabaru is considered very important, considering the large potential of marine and fisheries natural resources that it has, thus the majority of the population are fishermen.

According to him, if talking about people's welfare, it must be directly proportional to the capacity and quality of human resources. Therefore, it is important for Kotabaru to have educational institutions in this sector.

"The Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic College will have the status of a state institution, because the funding is entirely from the government (KKP Ministry)," he said
