Martapura, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Banjar Regent Khalilurrahman is optimistic of removing 1000 floating latrines along the Martapura River through demolition by the Public Works, Public Housing and Water Resources Office.


"We are optimistic that 1,000 floating latrines on the Martapura River can be erased and demolished. However, the public must be supported with the awareness to switch from defecating in the river to land," he said on Martapura on Thursday.

The regent made his remark after the launch of the Joint Movement for Realizing Sanitation Action (Gebraks) as a comprehensive and sustainable wastewater service program for people living on the banks of the river.

"This movement is one of the efforts to restore the quality of the Martapura River which is contaminated with wastewater from human waste," said the regent on the sidelines of the launch at Mosque At Taqwa Green Open Space, Pekauman Ulu Village, East Martapura.

His government has targeted that in five years from 2016 to eliminate 1,000 latrines. While a total latrines along the Martapura River are about 9,000.

"We have started a floating latrine removal program since 2016 and until 2018 as many as 564 latrines have been dismantled plus 2019 targeted at 300 latrines and in 2020 as many as 150 so that the target is reached," he said.

Head of the Banjar Public Works M Hilman said the target of demolishing 300 floating latrines could be realized if the community participated in supporting the government programs in creating sanitation and restoring river water quality.

"We have approached the community on the river side and they support it so we are optimistic that the target of removing 300 latrines in 2019 will be followed by 150 latrines in 2020 to reaching a total of 1,000 toilets," he said.
