Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The 2018 Jukung Festival in Martapura River was very lively because it was followed by several contingents from outside the region, namely Solo, West Java, and Central Kalimantan, on Saturday.
The festival which was held by the Youth, Sport and Tourism Agency in front of the Siring Piere Tendean attraction showed 96 rowing team racing along the river.
This is the momentum that was a spectacle attracting thousands of visitors along the river embankment (siring) of Martapura River.
Banjarmasin Mayor H Ibnu Sina said this is a competition that adds to the attractiveness of the Thousand River City, the most beautiful river city in Indonesia Banjarmasin.
The traditional wooden boat, jukung, as a typical mean of river transportation, he said, must be acquainted with a wider community till the world.
"With a jukung competition like this, it can make our city more well-known, especially its culture not only in Indonesia but the world," he said.
The organizing committee of the event Ir H Doyo Pudjadi said the traditional jukung competition to preserve the culture of the river in the city of Banjarmasin was attended by 96 teams who came from various parts of the region in South Kalimantan, as well as outside the region.
"In the future, we hope to hold more festive events and be followed more by regions outside of South Kalimantan to international," he said.
