Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Banjarmasin City Government is preparing to develop mass transportation to connect between regions with each other.
Head of the Banjarmasin City Transportation Agency Ichwan Nur Chalik said here on Thursday that the development of mass transportation is planned to be held in 2019. "At present discussions and studies on the development of mass transit are ongoing," he said.
Based on the study, he added, mass transportation is determined to use Elf, a minibus capable of carrying 20 people, because the traffic conditions in Banjarmasin are not possible for inter-regional buses to enter.
As for building a network, he added, it would be prepared around 13 corridors. Two corridors will be prepared by the government and 11 others will be offered to private, city transportation owners.
In 2019, he added, the city government will build two corridors by preparing 10 minibusses.
It is hoped that the mass transit program will make people interested again in utilizing public transportation, to improve the welfare of the community and to revive the regional economy.
According to Ichwan, it is currently impossible to maintain the existence of public minivan (angkot) as city transportation. Besides being unable to compete with online transportation, also the condition of transportation mostly must be
rejuvenated.
Based on the data, added Ichwan, out of 300 angkot in Banjarmasin, only 100 remained active. Likewise, the number of routes, from the beginning 33 now left 13 routes.
