Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Golf Association (PGI) of the Kotabaru District introduced students to golf to spark their excitement to the outdoor sport through the "Golf Goes to School" program at SMAN 1 Kotabaru.
Head of the Kotabaru PGI Tomy Junaedy said that it was part of the association's efforts to scout and coach potential young people in golf.
“We want to introduce that golf is not an exclusive sport, it can be accessed by anyone,including students. Through this program, we hope talented athletes will be born from Kotabaru,” he said in Kotabaru as reported on Tuesday.

Students were given basic understanding of golf, including basic techniques for hitting the ball, rules of the game, parts of the golf course, the equipment needed and sportmanship values contained therein.
Gold athletes and golf enthusiasts were presented to provide live demonstration and students were given chances to try hitting golf balls in prepared area.
They were even given the challange to get the ball into the hole. Anyone succeeded, PGI provided a prize.
Principal of SMAN 1 Kotabaru, Nasri SPd, welcomed the Kotabaru PGI initiative. “We really appreciate this program, because it provides new insights for our students. Hopefully this activity can be the beginning of developing interest in golf among studetns,” he said.
About 300 students seemed enthusiastic about taking part in the activity. One of participants, Ridwan, said he was delighted to be able to know the sport that previously only be seen on tv. “It turns out golf is fun and challanging. I want to learn more deeply,” he said.
With the success of Golf Goes to School at SMAN 1 Kotabaru, PGI plans to continue the activities to other schools in this area.
It is hoped that this program can develop golf in Kotabaru and produce talented athletes native to Kotabaru who can compete at national and international levels.
