"There are seven villages that had a lot of hotspots, so we have to provide guidance and insight that local communities understand the dangers of burning fields and forests," said President Director of Minamas Plantation Harianto Tedjawidjaya in Kotabaru, Thursday.
The seven villages are Bapera Village, Harapan Baru, Binturung, Lintang Jaya, Wono Rejo, Bekambit, and Sejakah village. These villages in 2015 had fire hot spots at most.
The program is conducted in cooperation between Minamas Plantation and University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) for six months.
The main objective of village-based fire prevention program to protect and preserve the environment, particularly in the villages adjacent to operational areas and around the concession of the company.
"Fire prevention is the real role of the company through non-governmental capacity building around oil palm plantation and through land good governance," he said.
He expects this cooperation program will provide a long term solution to all stakeholders with sustainable solutions for addressing the issue of smoke haze.
Vice Regent Burhannudin said forest and lands fire prevention measures should be made by various parties by joining hands.
"That's why this activity very important to be carried out in an effort the rural communities understand the dangers of fire, and they can adopt land clearing and manage agricultural waste without burning," he said.
