Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry has stepped up the capacity of Inspectorate General (Itjen) in violence prevention and handling in the education environment.
Education, Culture, Research and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim, in a statement, Monday, noted that the action is a response to the result of a survey that indicated the high level of violence faced by students.
"Ratification of two ministerial regulations to eradicate and prevent violence in the education environment is a brave move, but it is not the end from the effort to create a peaceful education environment," he remarked.
The ministry has issued Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministerial Regulation No.30 of 2021 on Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling in Universities.
Moreover, the ministry issued the Regulation No.82 of 2015 on Violence in Education Unit Environment Prevention and Handling.
Makarim affirmed that the two regulations offer the necessary impetus to improve service quality in eradicating three major problems in education, specifically sexual violence.
He also underlined the importance of the auditors' role within the ministry's Itjen in supporting the handling of cases of violence in the education environment.
According to the minister, all officials within the Itjen have a major responsibility of handling cases of violence, specifically sexual violence, in a more transparent and systematic manner in accordance with the procedure.
He reminded Itjen of their responsibility of taking care of the victims' security and secrecy as well as paying attention to their needs.
This includes providing psychological support and special aid if the victims have disabilities.
"This should be our guideline in handling all cases," he remarked.

He emphasized the importance of creating a work environment free from violence as the realization of the ministry's commitment in presenting an education system free from violence.
The Ministry's Inspector General Chatarina Muliana Girsang explained that her side has gone through several steps in responding to the phenomena of violence in addition to going through the two regulations.
Girsang outlined that the ministry had formulated a derivative regulation from the Permendikbudristek No. 30 of 2021, namely, the Secretary General Regulation No. 17 of 2022.
It regulates more specifically the prevention and handling of sexual violence in the university as data statistics indicated that this environment is the most vulnerable to sexual violence.
"To this end, the ministry maintains its commitment to eradicate all kinds of sexual violence in universities," she remarked.
Itjen's secretary, Subiyantoro, stated that main goal of the capacity improvement activity is to enhance the service quality of Itjen in handling cases of violence.
"This is Itjen's commitment in realizing safe, comfortable education units free from violence through prevention and handling of intolerance and bullying, including sexual violence in the education environment," Subiyantoro stated.
