Pelaihari, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Regent HM Sukamta asserted that the Tanah Laut District Government is tightening supervision on cows entering the Sarang Halang Pelaihari animal market.
"We need to strictly secure cattle from outside, especially from Java and Sulawesi, to enter Sarang Halang Pelaihari animal market first for the safety of our cows," said the regent after reviewing the proces of sample examining process on cattle at the animal market, Monday(May 9, 2022).
The examination involved veterinarians from the Tanah Laut Animal Husbandry and Health Agency, health officers from the South Kalimantan Plantation and Livestock Agency (Disbunak), and the Banjarbaru Veterinary Center.
It was to examine cow hooves, taking secretion through nose as well as saliva fluids through mouth and taking feces from the rectal of cows.
The measures taken related to the detection of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the livestock population in four disricts in East Java currently.
The regent wanted that an average 500 cattle traded every day in this market are in healthy condition, free from various diseases.
Sukamta reminded farmers to check the condition of their livestock regularly.
Healthy livestock, he said, can be an attraction to buyers, thus it providing distinct advantages for farmers.
"Farmers can take advantage of the availability of veterinarians and counseling workers . Please come to puskesmas (community health center) for consultation. The government ready to provide service fpr the health ot livestock to encourage livestock development in this region," he said.
Sunarto, a farmer from Bumi Jaya Village, Pelaihari Sub-district, welcomed the activity to anticipate the spread of foot and mouth disease.
He invited other cattle farmers to frequently pay attention to the condition of their cattle, and if they are sick immediately report it to the officers.
"Let's check and control our livestock regularly, once or twice a month. We can provide additional animal feed in the form of concentrate so the cow are healthy and fat quickly," said Sunarto.
