Martapura, South Kalimantan (Antaranews) - Aranio (a subdistrict in Banjar, South Kalimantan) Sector Police arrested two perpetrators of illegal logging and confiscated lumber and wood cutting tools they used.
Banjar Police Chief AKBP Daru Cahyono through Aranio Police chief Ipda R Djoko Setiawan in Martapura on Thursday said that two illegal loggers, with the initial Ya and Sa, were arrested on Wednesday (17/9).
"The two were arrested in illegal logging raid conducted by a joint team of Aranio police and Banjar Forest Agency on Wednesday at 16:00," said police chief who led the raid.
He said the raids targeted illegal loggers of timber forest products was a follow up of the raid in a protected forest area in the subdistrict of Aranio conducted in August 2014. Moreover, police received a report that illegal logging still takes place in the protected areas which always guarded its natural sustainability as the growth and development of biodiversity.
"The report turned out to be true because it is proven in a Matang Kanas protected forest at Tiwingan Village, Subdistrict Aranio, RT 2 RW 2, we found illegal logging using mechanical equipment," he said.
When combined team came, the perpetrators were trying to escape. However, two people were caught, including evidence of pieces of wood and other transportation facilities and equipment.
Seized evidences in the form of timber estimated at two cubic in the number of 36 stems and vary the sizes 3x5 and 5x5.
"We also seized evidence in the form of a black truck pickup Grand Max and one chainsaw machine brand Still 070 to cut down trees," he said.
