If (the perpetrators) are caught red-handed, it is easy to handle, there is no suspension of prisoners and no tolerance,Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - Riau Regional Police have already named 20 suspects of peatland burners that have caused Riau to continue to be hit by forest and land fires.
"From January to August 2, there were 20 reports of law enforcement with 20 suspects," said Riau Police Special Crime Director (Dirkrimsus) Senior Commissioner Gideon Arif Setiawan at the Riau Karhutla (Forest and Land Fire) handling evaluation meeting, at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru, Friday.
He explained, of the 20 cases, there were 12 cases had entered stage two, meaning the suspect and evidence had been transferred to the prosecutor's office to be brought to court. While seven other cases are still being investigated and one case is still in stage one.
"If (the perpetrators) are caught red-handed, it is easy to handle, there is no suspension of prisoners and no tolerance," he said.
During this time the Riau Police ranks became part of law enforcement at the Riau Forestry Task Force. Based on data from the Riau Police Ditreskrimsus, of the 20 cases, a total had resulted in a land fire of around 204 hectares. All the suspects are individuals, none from the corporation.
Riau has been in a state of emergency alert for forest and land fires from 19 February to 31 October 2019. Peatland fires are now continuing to expand resulting in haze in three areas, namely Pelalawan District, Dumai City and Pekanbaru City. In fact, smoke is also potential to be carried by the wind to Malaysia and Singapore.
