A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook Bengkulu city and its environs on Saturday night, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMGK) Office in Bengkulu province.


The earthquake was centered 76 kilometers southwest of Seluma in Bengkulu at a depth of 11 kilometers, but it did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, the BMKG office said.

"The tremor was strongly felt by residents of Bengkulu city, Seluma, South Bengkulu, Kepahiang and Curup," said Head of the BMKG Office's Information and Data Section Sudiyanto.

There was no immediate report of injuries or casualties.
