The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that 86 hotspots were detected in Riau Province, indicating the presence of forest fires, on Tuesday morning.


On early Tuesday, some 88 hotspots were found on Sumatra Island of which 86 were in Riau, Sukisno, head of the Sultan Syarif Kasim II meteorology station, stated here, Tuesday.

In Riau, 23 fires were detected in Rokan Hilir District, 22 each in Bengkalis and Dumai, seven in Meranti Islands, three each in Pelalawan and Indragiri, and two in Siak.

Of the 86 hotspots in Riau, 66 were believed to have arisen from fire spots spreading in Rokan Hilir, reaching 19 spots; 18 in Dumai; 17 in Bengkalis; four each in Meranti and Indragiri Hulu; and two in Pelalawan.

According to BMKG's weather forecast, parts of Riau would be cloudy on Tuesday and experience rainy weather in the evening, except in the coastal region where hotspots were detected.

Since January 2019, some 1,700 hectares of peatland area were gutted by fires in Riau. The authorities have made efforts to put out the fires from land and air and used weather modification technology to induce artificial rain.
