The Banjarmasin Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) this year programed intensive disaster response socialization for people with disabilities.

"In the past there were none, this year we conduct five socialization sessions as a form of our concern for them," said Head of BPBD H Muhammad Hilmi in Banjarmasin on Friday.

Whatever is taught, he said, everything related to disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, and fires.

Hilmi said, a disaster that often occurs in the city is fire. The lives of citizens who experience physical deficiencies are often threatened, and even become victims.

"This is what concerns us. They must be able to do, especially to save themselves, how," said M Hilmi.

Rescue officers and the fire brigades were also involved in the socialization. They, he said, must be responsive to save the disabled.

"When a disaster occurs, firefighters or rescue officials must seek first whether there are people with disabilities. If there is one, they must be rescued first, including the elderly," said M Hilmi.

He said there must be a mapping of disabled and elderly people, so that all can increase alertness and rescue quickly if at any time a disaster happens.

"We have to arrange it together in stages, because disaster can come at any time, we must be prepared to face it," concluded M Hilmi.
