Jakarta (Antaranews Kalsel) - The European Union (EU) supports Indonesia's efforts to reach a target of 100 percent of sustainable palm oil by 2020.

A number of policies taken by the Indonesian government, including a moratorium on oil palm plantation permits, a review of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification, replantation of oil palm, intensification of plantation land, and capacity building programs for independent smallholders are considered to be in the right direction.

"Now the key is to bring ISPO standards to a global level, so that they will be considered by consumers," said EU Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Guerend at a year-end media meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday (4/12) night.

European consumers, who have a high concern for the industry that has a major impact on environmental sustainability and global warming, need to believe that ISPO certificates are credible enough to prevent deforestation and biodiversity degradation.

The principles of sustainability are important for European consumers, who are the second largest importer of Indonesian palm oil after India.

Vincent emphasized that consumption of palm oil will remain high, because the commodity is a key element of many food products. But objectively, Europeans will choose palm oil produced responsibly.

"Because the Indonesian government is committed to improving sustainability standards in the palm oil industry, we believe supply will meet demand, and vice versa demand can be matched with supply," Vincent said.
