Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The Legislative Council (DPRD) of Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, urged the central government to realize the establishment of Mekar Putih, West Pulau Laut, into a Special Economic Zone (KEK).


Deputy Chairperson of Kotabaru DPRD Muhammad Arif here Friday said that with great potential and natural resources, Kotabaru would quite proper to become a special economic zone.

"All conditions that support almost all are owned by Kotabaru, from the geographical location right in the middle of Indonesia, and the sea is included in the Indonesian Archipelago Sea Channel (ALKI) II zone," Arif said.

Thus, he said, Kotabaru waters became one of the sea toll lanes not only a domestic sea crossing (western and eastern Indonesia) but became a crossing of ASEAN and the world.

Other advantages of large and complete natural resources start from the mining, plantation, marine and fisheries sectors, and it has a long coastline which is a very prospective tourism potential.

Arif admittedly, some other facilities must be fulfilled as supporting elements, such as the availability of transportation infrastructure that can connect with other regions.

In this case, he continued, the Pulau Laut Bridge that connects Kotabaru on the Pulau Laut (Sea Island) with the Kalimantan mainland in Tanah Bumbu District must be realized.

"In connection with that, we (Kotabaru's DPRD) will hold a consultation meeting with the central government, namely the National SEZ Agency in Jakarta," Arif explained.
