Amuntai, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The long dry season in 2018 brings special blessings to the agricultural sector in North Hulu Sungai (HSU). The area of rice planting increased compared to the previous year from 25,345 to 28,585 hectares.

Agriculture Agency's Acting Head Yuli Hertawan in Amuntai on Friday said the long dry season in the district became a rice planting period for farmers because of its area dominated by swampland (lebak).

"As the planting area increases, it is estimated that the amount of rice production this year will also increase," Yuli said.

HSU rice production until the end of October 2018 was 115,188 tons of dry-mill rice (GKG) with a harvest area of 23,598 hectares. Whereas last year 131,787 tons with a harvest area of 23,293 hectare (ha).

"Planting area that has not been harvested is still around 4,987 hectares," he said.

Increasing rice production in HSU is also caused by several paddy farming areas having two planting and two harvest, such as in Tambalang Kecil Village and Hambuku Raya Village.

Yuli added, in the optimization project for sub-optimal land this year there are three villages prepared to have two-crop and two harvest, namely Hambuku Raya Village with an area of 100 ha, Teluk Sinar Village 150 ha and Babirik Hulu Village 250 ha.

The rice varieties developed in these three villages are Chiherang and Mikongga managed by the Water Management Farmers Association (P3A).

Yuli admitted that several other regions experienced a slight decline in rice production during the dry season, whereas HSU farmers actually experienced increased production.
