Batulicin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The Tanah Bumbu Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) is handling land and forest fires or karhutla covering 163 hectares spread across a number of points.

Head of BPBD Tanah Bumbu Eriyanto Rais through the Head of Disaster Prevention and Management Division Abdul Rahim in Batulicin on Friday said that from April to August 2018 the burned land was spread in several sub-districts which had vacant land and shrubs.

"The local government has issued a karhutla disaster decree, and if the case increases, it will be upgraded to an emergency disaster," he said.

Karhutla often occurs in Kusan Hilir Subdistrict, even on August 22 the BPBD Tanah Bumbu and other firefighting teams managed to extinguish the burned land reaching 80 hectares.

The land fires are still unknown, but the temporary suspicion is caused by friction between dry leaves due to prolonged hot weather.

In Tanah Bumbu, almost all sub-districts have karhutla potential. However, this can be suppressed by giving awareness to local communities to reduce the burning of land and forests.

In this period, the karhutla case in Tanah Bumbu began to decline compared to before. There was additional rain during the dry season so that areas that have the potential to burn can be reduced.

"We continue to be prepared to handle the forest and land disasters, even BPBD has prepared joint personnel including the TNI, Polri, Manggala Agni, and the local community to ensure there is no karhutla in the 'Bersujud Earth' (Tanah Bumbu)," he said.
