Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) held an international seminar with the theme of Conservation on Biodiversity of Tropical Forest and Wetlands.


Environmental experts from within and abroad attended the seminar discussing the biodiversity of tropical forests and wetlands and how tomaintain them.

"Deliberately this seminar was held in the village of Kiram, precisely in Villa Uncle Birin, Kiram Park, Banjar Regency, in accordance with the theme of biodiversity conservation of tropical forests and wetlands, so there is a natural touch," said ULM's Vice Rector IV Prof. Dr. Ir Yudi Firmanul Arifin, Monday.

For two days from 9 to 10 July 2018, the international seminar which was initiated by Innovation Center for Science, Innovation, Technology, Commercialization, Management: Forest and Wetlands of Lambung Mangkurat University (PUI PT PHLB ULM) was indeed special.

The Kiram Village as a venue is a conservation forest area perfectly suited to the desired natural atmosphere of the seminar.

Moreover, participants from abroad such as Prof. Matt Hayward is a lion expert from the University of Newcastle Australia and Prof. Michael Mahony is a frog expert from the same university.

The seminar was also attended by Prof. Tum Robert and 20 students from the University of Newcastle and two from Van Hall Larenstein of Applied Science.

Prof. Yudi who is also Chairman of PUI PT PHLB ULM revealed, a similar international seminar routinely held since 2015 by PUI PT PHLB ULM, previously named PUI PT Sustainable Tropical Forest Management (PUI PT PHTB ULM).

In 2015 the theme of the seminar was Forest Rehabilitation on Post Mining Areas, then in 2016 and 2017 was Innovation and Commercialization of Forest product.

Especially for the year 2018 this seminar aims to maintain the biological richness of tropical forests and wetlands in Indonesia generally and Kalimantan Island in particular.

Speakers from within the country who attended, namely the Head of BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Agency) South Kalimantan Dr Mahrus Aryadi, primate experts from the University of Indonesia as well as Chairman of the Research Center for Climate Change (RCCC) Prof. Jatna Supriatna, an ecologist and wildlife conservation expert Dr Satyawan Pudyatmoko from UGM.

Also primate experts from IPB Dr. Entang Iskandar, Bogor botanist expert Dr. Sri Rahayu, nematode expert from ULM Dr. Abdul Gafur, ULM peat expert Dr Ahmad Kurnain, Director of Seameo Biotrop Dr. Irdika Mansyur, including Prof. Yudi as biodiversity and ecologist of ULM.

The total are 13 speakers and 147 participants. The activities on the second day is fieldtrip to Banua Botanical Garden, Taruna Park Pelaihari, and Bekantan Conservation in Panjaratan Village, Tanah Laut District.
