Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of Hall of River II Kalimantan of the Public Work and Public Housing Ministry's Directorate General of Water Resources Dwi Purwantoro said it supports the development of Martapura River and Barito River as a new tourist destination in Banjarmasin.

According to Dwi, the current river tourism in Banjarmasin is growing quite rapidly, so as to grow the local people's economy.

"We will support the development of river tourism through various efforts to improve the infrastructure and maintenance of the river to keep it clean and sustainable," he said in Banjarmasin on Friday.

Not only the river banks, such as in Siring Martapura, improvements will also be made at several other river points so that new tourist sites grow.

One of the efforts, he added, the agency has deployed about 400 people from various quarters, River Care Community (Malingai), the Army, employees of the River Hall and others, to help clean up the river.

"At the peak of the 26th of the Water Day, we are with all relevant parties, carrying out a clean river action along one kilometer," he said.

The action was expected to raise awareness that the sustainability and cleanliness of the river must be maintained properly.

"There should be a growing awareness from the community that the river is not a trash can," he said.

Currently, he added, the river conditions in Banjarmasin in particular and South Kalimantan in general, has experienced a tremendous sedimentation, or exceed the estimated because of bad environmental conditions, especially water catchment areas.

In addition, the water quality of rivers in South Kalimantan has also exceeded the recommended threshold, so it is not worth consumption.
