The urban forest area in Barabai, capital of Central Hulu Sungai district, South Kalimantan, has increased, a local official said.

"Additional urban forests have been created by private company PT Dharma Kalimantan Jaya (DKJ) which is based  here," Rusdiyanto, head of the district's forestry office, said here Tuesday.

The urban forests were located on banks of Barabai river, precisely at Jalan Hivea and  0.25 hectares wide.

The area has been planted with 23 rare plant species such as ironwood which consists of some kind of species for instance Agathis alba (amber), Swietenia macrophylla (wide leaf mahogany), Paraserianthes falcataria (sengon) and others, Rusdiyanto said.

"With the urban forest planted by PT DKJ, we already have three urban forests standing on a total area  1.5 hectares." he added.

Previously, two urban forest areas had been planted in Brabai city, each at Jalan Perintis Kemerderkaan with an area of 0.25 hectares and the other one was at Jalan Dharma Padawangan with an area of one hectare.

The location of urban forest area planted by PT DKJ is very strategic because it is close to several schools, Rusdiyanto said.

"Looking ahead, the area is not only as an urban forest but can also function as an educational forest especially for the students at schools adjacent to the location," he added.

It is very likely that it can be realized considering the trees in the urban forest consist of a wide variety of rare plants.

Therefore, the area is likely to be a place of observation or a kind of field laboratory for students.

In the government regulation number 63/2002 on urban forest it is mentioned at least ten percent of urban areas is the urban forest which development can be done by private parties.

For the privately-owned urban forest that is appointed would be given a form of compensation and when it is stipulated in the administration regulation it should not be used for 15 years.

It is hoped that the existence of the urban forest area would beautify Barabai city as well as create balance and harmony of the city's physical environment besides supporting biodiversity conservation.
