Amuntai, South Kalimantan (AntaramewsKalsel) - Amuntai Class IIb Prison, North Hulu Sungai (HSU) District, harvesting red ginger which is cultivated by Pengayoman Farmers Group which members are the prison inmates.


Head of Amuntai Prison Syamsuri Arsyad here on Saturday said it cooperates with the Agriculture Agency and Family Welfare Movement (PKK) team to grow ginger plants, by providing knowledge and skills to the inmates.

"Even though inmates in this prison, they also are North Hulu Sungai residents that we ought to build and give them skill, including in agriculture and plantation. Through Pengayoman Farmers Group they learn to cultivate red ginger, as the result is very potential to increase income," said Syamsuri.

He stated that as many as 250 seeds of red ginger are planted in plastic bags on vacant land in the prison. They were assisted by agriculture counseling team (PPL) from the Agriculture Agency.

In the harvest of red ginger, the crop is distributed to the community around Amuntai Prison in Sungai Malang Village.

"We from prison thanking TP PKK and PPL from the Agriculture Agency who have helped with the red ginger seeds and coaching to the inmates," he said.

Chairman of TP PKK Anisah Rasyidah expected various coaching to the inmates make them more creative and independent when later returned to the community. Anisah is grateful that warden and his staff have provided the inmates with skills and knowledge of religion.
