The government of central Hulu Sungai (HST) in South Kalimantan is trialling floating rice planting to be applied by Bersatu farmers group in Sungai Buluh Village, Labuan Amas Utara Sub-district, to deal with weather uncertainty in 2024.
Head of HST Agriculture Service Budi Satrya Tanjung here on Sunday said this step is taken to anticipate rice fields that are prone to flood in rainy season and drought in dry season
“Swamp land is very potential as an option when weather is uncertain, both rainy and dry season. At the trial stage farmers receive assistance of 500 sheets of styrofoam to produce 10,500 holes,” he said.
From the assistance allocated from the provincial budget, farmers also received fertilizer and superior Mekongga rice seeds, which have the advantages of high production, sturdy plant, resistance to collapse, resistance to disease, and fluffy rice texture.
“About one hectare of swamp land have been planted with floating rice. We will see and monitor the developments,” he said.
