The XVIII National Students Sports Week (Pomnas) in 2023, which is hosted by South Kalimantan and University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) as co-host, competed for 1,397 medals for the winners.

"There are 204 matches from 16 sports," said Chief Executive of the 2023 Pomnas Muhamad Rusmin Nuryadin at the grand launching of the event at ULM Auditorium in Banjarbaru, Thursday.

Rusmin said contingents from 34 provinces will each bring 362 athletes and officials. Even 24 provinces have confirmed to compete in 16 sports.

"This means that at least 10,000 will come to South Kalimantan and of course it will have a positive impact on increasing people's economy," he said.

The good news is that on November 15, 2023 President Joko Widodo plans to attend the opening ceremony of the Pomnas, which is scheduled to last 10 days from 12 to 22 November.

"Certainly it is a proud for our region that with the Governor Sahbirin Noor's full support we can host Pomnas after the last time in 2007," he said.

ULM Rector Prof. Ahmad Alim Bachri said that the chosing of ULM as organizer and South Kalimantan as the host for the Pomnas will be the event of hospitality and interprovincial competition, also opens up opportunities for tourism and MSMEs in South Kalimanta to revive.

"We expect for support of all sectors, especially tourism attractions and shopping for souvenirs so that they are ready to welcome the Pomnas delegation from all over Indonesia," he said.
 
The grand launching ceremony was marked by pressing siren led by Governor Sahbirin Noor with acting Head of the National Achievement Center Asep Sukmayadi, ULM Rector, and Chief Executive of the 2023 Pomnas which at the same time the launch of logo and mascot named as Si Mahing.

The Governor hopes that South Kalimantan will be successful in the implementation and achievements in Pomnas, as well as Pomnas becomes a blessing for the community with many guests to come.

The 16 sports that will be contested at Pomnas XVIII are divided into four districts and cities in South Kalimantan.

11 sports are contested in Banjarmasin, namely athletics, basketball, kempo, bridge, chess, futsal, wrestling, pencak silat, sepak takraw, field tennis, and sand volleyball. 

While in Banjarbaru there are badminton, karate, and taekwondo.

In Tanah Laut District there are rock climbing, and swimming competitions in South Hulu Sungai Regency.
