The Kotabaru Penitentiary opens education services on how to grow vegetables using hydroponic method conveyed directly by the inmates to visitors.

"The purpose of this activity is to let the public know that convicts are not only locked up, but in the penitentiary they learn to be independent," said Head of the Kotabaru Penitentiary Yosef Benyamin Yembisse here, Friday.

Yosep said, the activity is to train independence within the wall of the Kotabaru Penitentiary. Team work was formed through the Educational Assimilation Facility (SAE) to grow vegetables hydroponically.

"Every visitor or family of inmates who visiting will be educated directly by the inmates about this," said Yosef.

In this way, he is sure, gradually the connotation of convicts, which had been underestimated (garbage, criminal, negativity, and so on) will be removed.

Not only for inmates' families, the service will also be provided for the public to learn about planting pokcay, mustard green, lettuce, and other types of vegetables.

Kotabaru Penitentiary continues to strive for self-reliance for inmates with several programs, including the program for empowerment of inmates (Gerdana) and the inmates saving movement (Gernabung).

These program become flagship of the Kotabaru Penitentiary as a solution to create independent human being in accordance with the mandate of Law No. 22 year 2022 concerning Correction. 

In carrying out the program, Kotabaru Penitentiary cooperates with various parties, including Job Training Center (BLK), Industry and Cooperative Office, BRI branch of Kotabaru.

Yosef hopes that in the future Kotabaru Penitentiary will become one of places of education for the public for various skills to be self-reliace with a slogan of the best penitentiary, worship.
