The Chancellor of the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) Prof Ahmad Alim Bachri said the birth of the Proboscis Monkey (Bekantan) Doctor, named to the founder of Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia (SBI) Foundation Amalia Rezeki, strengthened ULM's position as a university that exels in the field of wetland environment.

"Congratulation to Amel, this is the best achievement from her hardwork as an environmental activist all at once bringing the good name of ULM nationally and even globally," he remarked here on Sunday.

Alim pointed out that what Amel and SBI team have done at the Curiak Island should be continuously encourgaed, because it is in line with the ULM's excellence in focusing on wetland.

In fact, he hopes that the biology lecturer at the Teaching and Education Faculty (FKIP) will soon get her functional position as a professor, so that ULM has a proboscis monkey conservation professor.

"Keep focusing on what you have done, because not many people can do it," he said.

ULM has disbursed approximately Rp21 billion for research in the wetlands field as an effort to increase lecturer publications which have been intensified since 2017.

Amalia Rezeki or familiarly called Amel has taken the final exam of ULM Doctoral Studies and was declared to have passed very satisfactorily last Monday (16/1).

Her dissertation was entitled “Strategy for Proboscis Monkey Habitat Management Outside Conservation Areas. In Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus) Conservation Efforts. (Case Study of Proboscis Monkey Habitat Management in the Proboscis Monkey Research Station Area of Curiak Island, Barito Kuala District, South Kalimantan).

After graduating, Amel was named the first female proboscis monkey conservation doctor in the world.
