Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of Banjarmasin Environmental Agency (BLHD) Hamdi states the city government prohibits retailers or modern stores selling plastic bags start at the end of March 2016.

Hamdi said that modern shops such as mini-market should sell bakul or local crafts shopping bag instead of plastic bags for their customers.

"So we ask them to inform their customers about this policy from now on. Let customers bring their own shopping bags, if they want to shop," he explained.

According to him, modern stores may provide shopping bags that are not made of plastic. They should be material that easily biodegradable, like paper or any other kind.

"Just kind of environmentally friendly materials, because if it is plastic unraveling, even up to hundreds of years is not destroyed on the ground," he said.

According to Hamdi, policy to reduce waste of plastic bags will also be applied in the traditional markets. People expected to realize and support policies for the preservation of environment.

"We ask the community  if you want to shop you should bring shopping bag from home. Do not use plastic bags again just to be thrown to and fro," he explained.

Because, said Hamdi, plastic waste is currently the biggest waste volume here with over 50 percent of the city's waste production which has reached 600 tons per day.
