Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The management of government owned water company PDAM Bandarmasih develops sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) in ??green open space in its Water Treatment Plant (IPA) at Jalan Pramuka Banjarmasin.


"At the initial phase 20 seeds of sugar palm planted, and many more in the future," said PDAM Bandarmasih Acting Manager Suhardi on the sidelines of the planting of sugar palm seedlings brought from Central Hulu Sungai (HST).

The planting of palm species was in cooperation with environmental organizations Green Community Forum (FKH), he said accompanied by Deputy Chairman of FKH Banjarmasin Mohamad Ary.

According to Suhardi, sugar palm development in green open space is very nice. In addition as exotic plant, it will also resist abrasion of river water. That's why this plant was planted on the banks of the river.

In addition to sugar palm, there are hundreds of plant seeds developed at the green open space from thousands of seeds planned to be planted, such as trambesi, bintaro, capes, princess palm, ivory palm tree (Cocos Nucifera Eburnea varieties).

According to Mohamad Ary, this first stage FKH planted 120 princess palm, 50 bintaro, 20 sugar palm, 100 tanjung, 25 trembesi, 25 red shoots, 20 ivory palm. In the future the number of plants will be propagated back in accordance with green space area.

Sugar palm chosen, because it almost never visible in Banjarmasin. Enau or sugar palm now become scarce plant, except in some areas of the upstream region (Banua Anam), South Kalimantan.

According to him, enau is the most important palm after coconut, because it is a versatile plant.
