A Tunas Baru farmers group in Sei Anyar Village, Banua Lawas Sub-district, Tabalong District, has developed true shallot seed (TSS) technology for shallot cultivation and the yields is higher than tuber.
Head of Vegetable Genetic Resource Management of the Tabalong Agrriculture Office Sri Astuty said that TSS production for shallot reached 20 to 25 tons per hectare.
"Cultivating shallot with seeds is not only more efficient, but the yields are more profitable than that of tuber," she pointed out in Tanjung, Monday.
Previously, the cultivation of tuber shallot in the northern area of Tabalong produced 7 to 10 tons per hectare.
Then the Ministry of Agriculture encouraged shallot farmers to use true shallot seed, thus TTS began to be developed in the southern area of the district.
Astuty said that this year the development of shallot cultivation with seeds is supported by APBN (state budget) fund covering an area of 30 hectares.
Red shallot seeds of maserati variety were than distributed to farmers in the villages of Ribang, Santuun, Bongkang, Hayup, Pugaan, Sei Anyar, Argo Mulyo, Mangkusip, Bilas, and Kinarum.
In addition, the 2022 APBN assistance is also provided for the development of bird's eye chili in the district.
Those assistance were expected to support the Tabalong government in improving its horticulture agriculture in preparing the district as a buffer zone for the new national capital (IKN).
