Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Management (BPSPL) which covers an area of Kalimantan Sukowardono said, the turtle population declines in South Kalimantan.
"Turtle population declines in South Kalimantan, although the exact figure yet recorded," he said after the rescue coordination forum of fish resources in Banjarbaru on Tuesday.
He said an indication of the decline of turtle populations in the category of fish was obtained through the society information, especially those living on the Sambar Gelap island, Kotabaru.
The information said the number of turtles climbed ashore usually reaches tens in one night, dropped to below ten heads.
According to him, the appropriate public records, the number of turtle eggs found along the Sambar Gelap Island during 2014 reached 80 thousand eggs.
"But we believe the number of eggs doubled from public records, while the number of turtles is not known because there are turtles that lay eggs and turtles do not," he said.
He said the cause of declining of turtle population partly because of the use of turtle eggs consumed and turtle captured either intentionally or not.
"Catching turtles mainly to take eggs are still ongoing so we try to prevent actions that damage the water resources," he said.
It still continues to monitor sea turtle populations, which lasted from 2014 to 2016 covers also all kinds of protected fish.
