A flash flood triggered by heavy rains struck East Java’s Batu City on Thursday, destroying at least 21 homes.

“Rains with high intensity which fell in Batu City caused flash floods in six different places in the city. As per preliminary data, 21 houses were destroyed,” the Center for Disaster Mitigation Operation Control of the Batu City Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said in a report.

On Thursday night, rescue workers were still evacuating the victims of the flash flood, which struck at 2 p.m. local time.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in the flood.

A joint team of rescue workers, including those from BPBD, got involved in the evacuation of affected people and cleaned residents’ houses.

The rescue workers were advised to stay alert for more floods as the potential for heavy rains in Greater Malang, including Batu City remains high.
