Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of South Kalimantan Agriculture Agency Fathurrahman says droughts that hit 13 district and munipalities in the province was actually able to increase productivity of rice.


According to Fathur, this year's drought makes agriculture swamp land in several districts become dry. The condition is very beneficial to farmers, because they can actually plant rice with a more large land area .

"This drought is able to increase rice productivity, because the land can be utilized wider by community," he said here on Wednesday.

According to him, the acreage until the third week in July 2015 was recorded as the largest area during the growing season this year reaching 55,000 hectares of generally ranges from 40,000 to 45,000 hectares.

As a result of this drought, he added, swampy lands are numerous in Tapin District, South Hulu Sungai and North Hulu Sunga, it could be used by farmers for the water subsided or dry.

Meanwhile, agricultural areas that experienced crop failure, spelled out very little. "Some failed harvests, but very little," he said.

Drought is expected to last until early October in Sumatra, Java, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) recorded drought in Indonesia this year followed by the El Nino phenomenon. As a result, the drought noticeably dry and early rainy season retreat.
