Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - A village surrounded by Barito River and Martapura River, it name Pulau Sugara, in the Barito Kuala District, but adjacent to the city of Banjarmasin, has great potential as a tourist attraction.


"It turns out Sugara Island has a lot of home industries and unique, and it actually could be sold to tourists through tour packages," said Mohamad Ary known as vice chairman of the Green Community Forum (FKH) and Chairman of the Community of Antique Bicycle Banjarmasin (Saban) when on the island on Saturday.

When members of FKH and Saban cycling around the city campaigning environmental friendly transport and energy saving, they stopped over at the island.

There is traditional whiting or lime paste industry by four families from generation to generation, also a manufacture of catamarans (canoe), klotok (river motorboat) and manufacture of large boats (barges).

In addition there are various handicrafts of pastries, cakes, woven craft, and there is a traditional market that sells various natural products and small industries products.

Sugara island life is always associated with the river, although considered normal life for local residents, could be outstanding in the eyes of tourists, especially from abroad.

Seeing the uniqueness should be the existence of the island Sugara attractions that can be sold by the Tourism Agency, either of provincial or of district and municipality.

"Unfortunately if not popularized as a tourist attraction. For example whiting industry was only frequently visited by foreign tourists," said Mohamad Ary quoted crafters.

Travelers curious and confused to see the process of making whiting. Without the use of hot water, but boiling so strong as if boiled, whereas raw materials only seashells just spiked with water not hot.
