Extreme rainfall on early Saturday caused flooding in several parts of the capital, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated.
"The drainage system in Jakarta has a capacity of 50-100 millimeters. If the rainfall crosses 100 millimeters per day, inundation will undoubtedly occur," the governor noted at the Manggarai sluice gate in South Jakarta on Saturday.
According to data of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), rains, with an intensity of above 150 millimeters, lashed the capital on early Saturday.
"Based on the BMKG data, rainfall reached up to 226 millimeters in Pasar Minggu, 197 millimeters in Sunter Hulu, 176 millimeters in Halim, and 154 millimeters in Lebak Bulus. All the figures above 150 millimeters indicated extreme condition," he pointed out.
Consequently, several areas in Jakarta were swamped. Jakarta is still placed on siaga (watch) status for flooding, whilst the floodwaters from the southern outskirts of Bogor and Depok are expected to flow in.
"Waters from the upper reaches (in Bogor) and mid-area (Depok) are on the way to Jakarta. Of course, during the course of its movement, it affects nearby areas," he stated.
Extreme-intensity rains pelted the capital since early Saturday, submerging several areas, especially in South Jakarta and West Jakarta.
The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) has forecast heavy rains on early Saturday to potentially recur on Sunday (Feb 21).
