Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - South Kalimantan put in sixth priority in the plan to accelerate the development of irrigation to improve regional and national food production to achieve food self-sufficiency.


Head of South Kalimantan Public Works Agency, Martinus, here on Wednesday said that the position of this province was previously at 27th of all regions in Indonesia.

"Now the government has seen South Kalimantan is one of the provinces that have quite high agricultural potential, then it has now put the budget for irrigation development in this area to rank six," he said.

That is, added Martin, the central government gives serious enough attention to accelerate the development of agricultural sector, through the development of a much more adequate irrigation.

Currently, he said, a center team consist of some directors of the irrigation and drainage sector has been dropped to conduct a review of efforts to accelerate the development of agriculture and irrigation, so the development plan desired by all the farmers in this area be realized.

Some of irrigation will be completed, said Martin, among others, three dams which have been started to be built in recent years, namely dams Amandit in South Hulu Sungai (HSS), dam Pitap in Balangan, and dam Alai in Central Hulu Sungai (HST).

Additionally, it will be built a new dam, namely dams Kinarum in Tabalong, in which all the weir can be completed more quickly than previously planned.

South Kalimantan with an area of about 37,000 square kilometers inhabited by 3.6 million people spread over 13 districts and cities is an agricultural area, and including the national food buffer.
