China led in terms of the foreign tourist arrivals in Jakarta in September 2020, constituting nearly half of the total figure.

"The total tourist arrivals reached 7,528 in September 2020, of which 3,604 came from China," Chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Office in Jakarta Buyung Airlangga noted in a written statement released on Monday.

The other foreign tourists arriving in Jakarta comprised 588 from South Korea, 306 from Japan, 278 from the US, and 185 from France.

The number of tourist arrivals in September 2020 rose by 67.77 percent, as compared to 7,528 a month before and brought the number of foreign tourists visiting the Indonesian capital in the first nine months of 2020 to 374,495.

The foreign tourists travelled to Jakarta via the Soekarno Hatta Airport and Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan had earlier officially lifted a transitional large-scale social restriction (PSBB) policy and reverted to the stringent PSBB policy on September 14-27, 2020. The stringent PSBB policy was again extended to October 11, 2020, in response to a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases.

The governor affirmed that the stringent PSBB policy was adopted on the basis of three indicators: mortality rate, availability of hospital beds for self-isolation and intensive care units (ICUs) for COVID-19 patients, and a spike in the number of new COVID-19 cases.
