Due to the current shortage, the price of sugar in markets in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, was Rp18.000 per kilogram as of Thursday (March 19, 2020).

"We sell sugar at about Rp13.000 per kilogram previously, but in the last few days we forced to sell Rp18.000 per kilogram," said Udin, a trader in Banjarmasin, Thusday.

He only heard that the stock was empty at the agent, as a result, the price of sugar jumped by Rp5,000 to Rp18.000 per kilogram.

Head of South Kalimantan chapter of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) Arif Mando said the agency has submitted a request to the central office for a supply of 3.000 tons of sugar.

"Until now our request has not been fulfilled by the center," Arif said.

But Arif received information that in early April raw sugar will enter around 29.750 tons, for the national needs. It cannot directly be consumed, but it need to be processed first. While a factory in Blora, Central Java, has a processing capacity of only 500 tons per day. 

Meanwhile, Trade Minister Agus Suparmanto said on Wednesday (March 11, 2020) in Jakarta that the government will launch a market operation in the near future to stabilize sugar prices.

Sugar prices reached Rp17,400 per kg on Wednesday, surpassing its price ceiling of Rp12,500 per kg, according to the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS).

The Bulog has put forth a proposal to import 200 thousand tons of refined crystal white sugar to facilitate stabilization in the commodity's price.

"We only have sugarcane harvest after Eid Al-Fitr. We have urged the government to task (Bulog) with importing sugar. We proposed 200 thousand tons of imports for consumption not in raw sugar," Bulog's Director for Operational and Public Services Tri Wahyudi Saleh stated in Jakarta on Wednesday (February 19, 2020).
