Rains lashing Jakarta and its surrounding areas since Monday night until Tuesday morning triggered flooding in several parts of South Jakarta.

Floods inundated several areas in South Jakarta, with the floodwaters of varying depth, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police stated through its Twitter account @TMCPoldaMetro on Sunday

According to the Twitter account, 80-centimeter (cm)-deep floodwaters swamped several homes in the Pondok Karya police dormitory in Mampang Prapatan.

Flood also inundated Poncol, Kuningan Barat, with the water level reaching a depth of 30-50 cm.

Chief of the South Jakarta Transportation Office Budi Setiawan revealed that floodwaters inundated several streets, including Jl Kemang IX.

"Some 40-50-cm deep floodwaters submerged Jl Kemang IX," he stated.

Meanwhile, some volunteers of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of the South Jakarta chapter reported floodwaters of 50-100 centimeters deep had submerged several residential areas.

Spokesman for the South Jakarta chapter of PMI Dedet Mulyadi remarked that Pengadegan, Bukit Duri, Bintaro, Bangka, Rawajati, Kemang Selatan, and Jatipadang were among the flooded areas.

"In Pengadegan, the number of evacuees at rented flats began to increase," he pointed out.

In the meantime, the status was reportedly raised to alert at the Manggarai floodgate since the water level had reached 950 cm

At least 43 people lost their lives in the floods that inundated several areas in Jakarta, Bekasi, Depok, Bogor City, Bogor District, Tangerang City, South Tangerang District, and Lebak District early this year, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Nine of the dead were Jakarta's residents. Some of them had died of drowning and electric shock.
