People in South Kalimantan, especially Banjarmasin, Banjarbaru, Martapura and Marabahan enthusiastically performed kusuf (solar eclipse) prayer as the rare phenomenon occured at about 12.50 WITA (Central Indonesia Time).

At least 36 mosques spread across thr four cities held kusuf, and 30 of them were in Banjarmasin, including Sabilah Muhtadin, Al-Jihad, KH Ahmad Dahland, Al-Muhajirin, Hasanuddin Majedi.

Despite the fact weather was cloudy and rainy, after heavy rain from night untuil dawn before, the residents were quite enthusiastic in attending the prayer. It could be seen since 11 a.m. some of them had come to the mosques that held the eclipse prayer which was performed simultaneously Ba'da Zhuhur (after midday prayer).

But unusual thing happened in the Al-Jihad Mosque on Jalan Cempaka Besar, Central Banjarmasin. Before the kusuf prayer, which was led by ustadz (Muslim preacher) Azhar Fitri, the congregation who crowded almost all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor of the mosque, firstly carried out fardhu kifayah prayer over two deceased Muslim. 

The congregation solemly followed through the stages of the ritual that began with the Zhuhur prayer, then fardhu kifayah, and finally eclipse prayer which ended with khutbah (sermon).

Sabilal Muhtadin Grand Mosque, which is the largest mosque in South Kalimantan, also held the Solar Eclipse Prayer on Thursday after the Zhuhur prayer.

"The solar eclipse is one of the signs of the greatness of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. This is in the Fussilat Verse 37," said KH Darul Quthni who became
Khatib during the solar eclipse prayer.

Likewise the Al Muhajirin Mosque on Jalan HKSN Raya, North Banjarmasin, was led by Ustadz H Firdaus as imam and khatib. He conveyed spiritual messages in response to annular solar eclipse.

"Solar eclipse or lunar eclipse are clear evidence of the sign of the Almighty Allah Azza wa Jalla and not an ordinary natural phenomenon," he reminded.

In accordance with the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu alaihi Wassalam, Muslims, if encounter an eclipse then ordered to perform shalat (kusuf), pray a lot, read a lot takbir, and give alms.

Based on Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) data, all regions in Kalimantan can witness the ring eclipse with varying intensities ranging from 70 to 94 percent.
