An earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck Gunung Kidul District in the Yogyakarta Special Province on Monday.
The quake that hit at 10:47 a.m. local time was epicentered 130 kilometers southwest of the district capital of Wonosari at a depth of 40 kilometers beneath the sea, Chief of the Yogyakarta Geophysics Station Agus Riyanto stated.
"Judging by the location of the epicenter and hypocenter depth, it was a shallow earthquake caused by subduction activities," he explained.
The tremor was also felt by the people in Bantul, Berbah Sleman, Wonosari, and Wates at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) II.
The quake did not trigger a tsunami.

Quoting the result of monitoring conducted by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) until 11:15 a.m. local time, he stated that no aftershocks were detected.
"We call on the public to remain calm and shun irresponsible reporting (on the quake)," he affirmed.
No immediate report was received of fatalities and injuries due to the quake.
