Some of residents houses on Jalan Tegal Arum, Banjarbaru, besieged by peatland fire, Saturday noon. The location was close to Syamsudin Noor Airport.

Antara witnessed, land and forest fire taskforce from the Banjarbaru Police and South Kalimantan Regional Police battled to extinguish the fire.

"We focus to overcome fire which is approacing residents houses. While Mobile Brigade (Brimob) deploy water cannon," said Chief of South Kalimantan Regional Police's Brimob Unit Sr Comr (Kombes) Ardiyansyah Daulay.

Two fire spots became their focus: across the junior high school SMPN 15 Banjarbaru and the land toward Jalan Kasturi 2, where the fire was so close to the housing complex of Kasturi Indah 3 RT 29, Syamsudin Noor Urban Village.

Fire at the two location was alarming as both so close to people houses.

Besides Brimob personnel, the Sabhara Directorate and the Traffic Directorate involved in the put out effort. They used patrol cars each carrying tank equipped with an alkon pump to watering the fire.

"Effort to extinguish the fire in Jalan Tegal Arum or Guntung Damar area was also assisted with one unit of water tanker from Indonesia Offroader Federation (IOF) South Kalimantan," Daulay said.

Meanwhile, a resident who resides in the Kasturi Indah 3 Housing Complex, Rusman, acknowldged how worried he was when the fire was only about 30 meter from his house. 

"Alhamdulillah (thank God), officers swiftly extinguished the fire, although we are so worried, because fire appears everyday. It usually at midday when hot sun blazing," he told.

Land fire in this area have so far disturbed flights in the airport as the haze it resulted limited visibility.
