South Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD) member H Agus Mawardi asked the government or related agency to quickly take action to overcome the Riam Kanan irrigation dike leak issue, before it cause a new and fatal problem.

"Because Riam Kanan irrigation is for the public interest and is multi-functional," he insisted in Martapura, Saturday.

The National Awakening Party (PKB) potilician hoped the Riam Kanan irrigation which water source from the Riam Kanan dam in Banjar District must be protected and well maintained.

"Local government or related agency should check the information of its dike breaking down. If it is true, what to do to reduce the effect to other function," he continued.

Agus, who will be member of Commission III overseeing development and infrastructure, said he and other members will observe the Riam Kanan. 

"The allotment of Riam Kanan irrigation is for agriculture in general, not only for fishery or aquaculture, but also for food crop agriculture, such as rice farming and plantation," he pointed out.

It water is also become raw water for tap water company (PDAM). As is now in the long drought seawater intruded the river till the PDAM Bandarmasih's water intake in Sungai Tabuk. It has then no other choice except to take raw wate from Riam Kanan.

Meanwhile, an issue has spread in the media that a resident of Banjar has leaked the dike of the irrigation for the purpose of fishery business of his ownself.

It violated the the local regulation and impacted other interests who need water from the irrigation that is should be immediately handled.
