The Tanah Bumbu Trade and Industry Agency (Disdagri) is now developing brown sugar powder (locally known as gula semut) as a variant of palm sugar product which is economically profitable alternative businees.

Head of the agency H.Deny Haryanto through Head of Industri Division H. Fityanto here on Saturday said the development of product was carried out by providing training for three days for residents to learn to process the product.

"Tanah Bumbu has a promising potential, a good market, thus we need to develop variant products to be able to compete in the market," he remarked.

The brown sugar powder has so far has three variants, namely ginger flavor, coffee flavor, and original.

The product is now being developed in several villages, on of which is Sungai Rukam Village in Kusan Hulu Sub-district.

H.Fityanto said, brown sugar powder contains thiamin or Vitamin B1 which function as coenzyme in energy metabolism, strengthen the nerve system and muscle, help the body make and use protein.

It also helps red blood cells to produce antibodies together with enzyme to produce energy needed by human body and others.

"The developing of palm sugar variant products is expected to effect the increase in economy and effect the business actors to work professionally," he said.
