The City Government of Banjarmasin stated it support for the declaration of Meratus Mountains as an Indonesian National Geopark. The letter of statement was signed by the Mayor Ibnu Sina.
"I am the mayor of Banjarmasin fully support the recognation of Meratus Mountains as an Indonesian National Geopark in accordance with the UNESCO's 38C provision in developing UNESCO Global Geopark," he stated here, Monday.

With the recognation, he expected, the development programs in South Kalimantan Province in the future to refer to the provision and remain to accomodate its local wisdom.
"Thus the geopark will really be an area of reservation, shelter, education, community development, and tourist destination," he emphasized.

From the information gathered, the support for the determination of the area with agreed boundaries to be designated as the National Geopark area, was also carried out by all other regional heads in South Kalimantan.
The Provincial Government declared the Meratus Mountains National Geopark (GNPM) in Kiram Park attraction in Banjar District, in 2018. In 2019, the GNPM board of management to focus on optimizing two geosite, namely Kahung and Matang Keladan. Then proposing the GNPM international status to UNESCO in 2020.
